Building a robust regional Cloud DR strategy on AWS meeting 100% uptime across region for Tier 1 applications
Our client, a privately owned Service Industry company, had 95% of business applications running on AWS with multi-AZ deployment. However, for the past few months due to AWS regional outages they were facing challenges in keeping their business online during these outages and were losing customers and revenue.
Our customer turned to Fiakomind’s for strategic and technical support on building and implementing a regional DR strategy for their application deployed using multiple AWS services (Kubernetes, Lambda, KMS, Secrets, Databases to name few).

Our Solution
Through our detailed analysis of customers business applications and after interviewing several key stakeholders in the company, Fiakomind’s has managed to map the applications in different tiers and analyzed the critical Tier 1 application which had an impact on business in terms of revenue and customer satisfaction. We selected those Tier 1 application as part of the DR project and the remaining associated applications were kept out of scope to reduce implementation and AWS cost.
Our proposed strategy was to build a regional DR model meeting 2 critical factors; 1) ability to move applications from 1 region to another during a regional AWS outage 2) ability to recover quickly in case of a security breach and data loss in primary region.
Our Challenges and Remedies
One of the key challenges that Fiakomind’s faced initially was understanding the complex nature of applications inter-connectivity and their associated AWS services which were built mainly using serverless architectures and native AWS services including databases. Once the application architectures were figured out, our team mapped out individual AWS services and their restrictions in moving to a regional model (single region to multi-region service offerings) along with their versions. Each individual AWS service (forming an application set) were then targeted and migrated to multi-regional model without impacting the business operations. Stage 1 was to set and migrate AWS services for their Staging/Test application and tested for any issues & challenges. Once the UAT were successful, production applications were then moved to multi-regional model and tested.
We conducted multiple DR tests and achieved 100% success rate. This was done in collaboration with customers applications team for any app configuration changes and testing.
Conslusion
While multi-AZ strategy would be good enough for customer to sustain and continue running their business, its Multi-Region which gives complete recovery capabilities. Therefore, a successful and comprehensive deployment of AWS services in a multi-regional model along with orchestrated DR services is the right approach for industries to take.
